Exploring Flavor, Spring 2023
Mar 23, 2023
A new season of cookbook club is getting ready to begin, and it might be my favorite yet!
We are about to explore a topic that has been the focus of my career for many decades. One that – despite being subjective on both physical and emotional levels – affects us all.
Exploring Flavor
So many of our previous adventures have introduced us to new seasonings, cooking techniques, and flavors. We've explored continents, history, cultures, and the lives of legends. Now we'll head into a rich and challenging sensory deep dive, unlike anything we’ve done in the past.
Our Spring 2023 season begins on May 2 with an examination of the science of flavor and our experience of it, often through the vivid Indian-influenced recipes in Flavor Equation by Nic Sharma.
We’ll then experience the world through the most elemental flavor and building block of life, salt. Our guide for this adventure is the inimitable Naomi Duguid through her latest work, The Miracle of Salt.
Our third book shines a light on our spice cabinets. For many of us, that’s the area of the greatest investment in our pantries… the key to our time and travel machines! In his book, Spice/a cook's companion Mark Diacono demystifies these aromatic treasures and introduces many more. All while providing a world tour of recipes that show them off in the most delicious ways - often through generous contributions of natives to each cuisine.
Our last book of the season eases us into summer in our final session on June 13. Here, our focus turns to the sweet things in life as we cook from Sweet Enough by Alison Roman. Expect casual, effortless, simply sophisticated desserts that are just sweet enough!
I hope to see you for Exploring Flavors on Zoom soon...
Cheers!
