A passionately detailed guide to the domaines and vintages of the great French wine region, Wines and Vineyards of Burgundy is the kind of comprehensive guide that has become scarce over the last several decades. Authors Camillo Favaro and Giampaolo Gravina revive the genre with authority and perception that we hope will inspire other writers and publishers.
Their initial broad overview of the region includes geologic maps that make clear just how different soil composition is in, say, Chablis vs. ths Mâcconais, along with descriptions of the most commonly grown grapes. Then it’s off to an appelation-by-appelation guide to 200 domaines, with commentary on their most notable and recent wines. The authors are most interested in capturing “the specific expressiveness of the wines as they relate to the different climats of origin, a bond that in some cases is solid and precise and in others rather weak and unconvincing.” They note that in some cases that means they have had little to say about a great name or two. 38 color maps provide useful insight into the lay of the lands.
Camillo Favaro, himself a small-scale wine maker in his family’s business in Piemonte, is also a design and merchandising expert for wineries. Giampaolo Gravina, a philosopher and wine-writer, teaches at Slow Food University and has been the co-editor of the Vini di Italia annual wine guide. Their 2012 edition of this book, which was published only in Italian, sold out quickly. This edition has been translated by the American wine writer Burton Anderson, who has given the text clarity and precision.
