The founder of preppykitchen.com, a popular blog that took off in the pandemic, John Kanell has a gift for smart adaptations of traditional dishes, infusing them with new flavors or subtly inverting expectations.
Most of what he offers in this, his first cookbook, is meant to be weeknight food, with an occasional special celebration recipe included from time to time. The food is presented seasonally (starting in the fall) and recipes are often accompanied by notes on easy substitutions in case an ingredient is hard to locate or it's simply time to change things up.
Among the ideas Kanell shares:
- Persimmon and fennel salad
- White cheddar and rosemary dinner rolls
- Chickpea salad sandwiches
- Crab cake latkes with garlic-caper aioli
- Black bottom cranberry tart
- Orange Linzer cookie wreathes
Everything is attractively photographed, adding to the inspiration. If you’re an Ina Garten fan who feels you have plenty of Barefoot Contessa books, Preppy Kitchen has some of the same vibes while still feeling fresh.
Hardcover. Color photographs throughout.
