In 2003 the culinary world was rocked by French chef Bernard Loiseau’s (1951–2003) death by his own hand. The tragic end of one of the most decorated and media-covered chefs at the time exposed the immense pressures and sacrifice involved in the endless pursuit of success in fine dining.
American journalist Rudolph Chelminski, who had lived and worked in Paris, produced a biography of the chef, The Perfectionist (2005), just a few short years after his passing. As a longtime friend of Loiseau’s, Chelminski writes with a clear personal investment; at times this can give readers the unsettling sense of watching a stranger awkwardly work through their grief in public.
Ultimately, however, that discomfort became increasingly familiar to anyone with ties to the food world in the last twenty-plus years. The themes and context surrounding Loiseau’s death have been repeated time and again in the public eye, no less shocking each time. The Perfectionist, alas, remains relevant and symbolic of larger, ongoing conversations about mental health in a relentlessly demanding industry.
