Speaking Broadly is a new zine dedicated to the generosity and community of women in the hospitality business. Most of its contributors are chefs and cooks rather than writers, working in short-form, many contributing recipes.
Dana Cowin, former editor-in-chief of Food & Wine, is the founder, building on connections made through her Speaking Broadly podcast. Among the pieces in this issue are:
- Chef Zahra Tangora's father was lying in the hospital, in bad shape, angry and afraid. Could she keep him alive forever by making him a perfect meal?
- Chef Nini Nguyen's favorite New Orleans restaurant dishes and grandmother's stew bring solace and joy even during the toughest times
- Sommelier Victoria James rescues pink wine from ignominy with a guide to discovering the best that rosé has to offer
With a kicky, energetic design and a willingness to address issues that are practical, weighty, fun, or some combination thereof, Speaking Broadly is a fresh approach.
The plan is for the magazine to be an annual publication.
Paperback. Color photos and illustrations throughout.
