Para Llevar is periodical dedicated to the stories of hospitality and service workers.
Each issue focuses on the staff of a different foodservice establishment. In this case, the staff of Vern’s, a neighborhood joint in Charleston, SC, situated a little out of the way from the city’s more famous restaurant zones.
Charleston is definitely a restaurant town and the staff at Vern’s are often veterans of storied establishments, either those in the city or elsewhere but drawn to the city because of its reputation. We learn about the lives inside and outside the restaurant, and here and there someone shares a recipe from the kitchen or their lives.
We learn something about how a restaurant operates, but just as much about how its people operate outside the restaurant.
