In the late 19th century, US demand for oysters outpaced the once bountiful supply of the Chesapeake Bay, threatening industry collapse. In 1882, morphologist William K. Brooks (1848–1908) was directed by the Governor of Maryland “to examine the oyster bed, and to advise as to their protection and improvement.” The Oyster (1891) was Brooks’ published expansion of the original 1884 report to the Governor, written to help the wider public appreciate the complexities of protecting the beloved mollusk.

Brooks describes oyster anatomy, reproduction, diet, and ecology in the Chesapeake before suggesting management solutions through policy change and through innovation. He encourages local investment in the industry, seasonal closure of beds, and the artificial cultivation and fertilization of oysters as a means of replenishing supply.

It is a passionately written book that feels as relevant today as it must have then with its prescient call to save something of our present joys for future generations.

Ours is a later printing ex-library copy, bearing the bookplate and stamps of Blackstone Public Library in Branford, CT. It includes 16 plates, all of which are present, though some are detached, many show repairs, and one (plate 16) was bound into the book in the wrong spot, a haphazard repair. Minor soiling and creasing to the interior. The green clothbound case shows wear and light fraying.
