The Indecisive Chicken (2015) brings together the recipes and stories of eight women living in the multiethnic Dharavi neighborhood in north-central Mumbai. Written by historian and fiction author Prajna Desai, the prose is evocative and intoxicating, a refreshing balm for rote marketing copy.
Desai introduces each contributor with a brief, colorful biography followed by a handful of recipes. She describes Sarita Rai, for example, as a “silent philosopher,” a physical presence almost imperceptible until she begins to zealously speak of food—”The change is dramatic. It’s like she has been possessed by a spirit.” Her recipe for spicy, stewy jackfruit follows and is equally impactful in its first impression: “It has a feral attitude.”
