First published in 1655, The Queens Closet Opened—comprising three volumes titled The Pearl of Practice, A Queens Delight, and The Compleat Cook—was transcribed from the recipe books of Queen Henrietta Maria, widow of Charles I, of England. Despite being published during the English Civil War(s) while the Queen was in exile in her native France, the book saw some nine editions in twenty-five years—one of the most popular cookery books of its time.
This 1984 facsimile reprint produced by Prospect Books omits the medical volume (Pearl) and offers the culinary texts on their own—The Compleat Cook on savory dishes and A Queens Delight on confectionery—their first reprint in over 200 years. A wonderful reference for early-modern royal dining habits.
