B. Manischewitz Co., Cincinnati, 1930. Hardcover. Fair. Third edition.
Tempting Kosher Dishes was issued, as a means of advertisement, by the Manischewitz Company whose matzos and other specialty products were important to early Jewish immigrants to the US not yet familiar with local ingredients.
While these newcomers had diverse national origins and first languages, nearly all spoke Yiddish as well. Books printed in the US catering to this audience were often produced bilingually in Yiddish and English, as is this best-known, third edition of Tempting Kosher Dishes.
The recipes are mainly baked goods, which, because they employ Manischewitz products, are all kosher for Passover. Also included are 16 pages of color plates and several pages, in both languages, of advertisements for Manischewitz.
This copy is well-loved. While the interior is clean and bright, the case has taken a beating. It shows heavy wear and soiling, a scotch tape-repaired spine, and a split front hinge. Fully functional but delicate. The matzo ball soup recipe (here named “feather ball soup Alsatian style”), includes an errata correction pasted over the original. There is a pagination error on the English half, which also seems to be consistent across printings, in which pages 78 and 79 are followed by two pages of advertisements then an additional page 79 and 78 (in that order) with new recipes.
