by Mollie Katzen

Ten Speed Press, Berkeley, 1988. Hardcover. Near Fine. Signed first printing.

Mollie Katzen is best known as author and illustrator of 1974’s countercultural icon of vegetarianism, the Moosewood Cookbook. Twelve books followed, all of them adorned with the author’s own art, and those that are still in print remain among our bestsellers in the vegetarian and the kids’ categories.

Katzen’s fine art background undeniably plays a role in the aesthetic of her published works. Still Life with Menu (1988), her third cookbook, was the first to include her full color paintings. Fifty still lifes inspire nearly forty vegetarian menus, suitable for everyday meals and special occasions, not to mention dozens of additional recipes to mix and match and do-ahead advice for planners.

A Chanukah dinner menu includes Tunisian caponata, pita, latkes with a three fruit sauce, spinach salad with green goddess dressing, and a gooey chocolate dessert. A light summer meal involves yellow squash soup, corn-rye bread, avocado and grapefruit salad, and oatmeal cookies. And a substantial section on pasta dishes will liven up your quick and easy weeknight repertoire.

We’re pleased to offer a Near Fine copy of the first printing signed by Mollie Katzen. The jacket, Very Good, shows creasing and wear about the edges.
