7.5” x 9.79” photo of the Smith McPherson and Donald Brewery (misspelled in the annotation on the back), founded in 1847, at 164 West 18th St. between 7th and 8th Ave. The view from above makes the streetscape nearly anonymous; however, a wooden beer barrel can be seen above the brewery’s front window, and a wrought iron cart bearing the Smith’s name is just visible on the street in front.
The reverse of the photo mentions that this location later became Knickerbocker Brewery (founded by William Pond, not the one of the same name founded by Jacob Ruppert, once the owner of the Yankees). This Knickerbocker had the space c. 1884. The building immediately to the left has the date 1860 surrounding the gable vent, putting the photo somewhere between those dates.
Mounted on sturdy stock, showing creasing, tears, chipping, and soiling; however, the image is nicely intact.
