OP: (photograph) Jack's Manhattan Oyster and Chop House (ND)

This item is no longer available.

8” x 6.5” photograph of the interior of Jack’s restaurant at 6th Ave. and 43rd St., showing a packed dining room full of well-dressed guests, tuxedoed staff, and potted palm plants. Jack’s operated from 1891–1925.

Originally founded by John Dunston as an oyster house, Jack’s eventually came to be the hub of nightlife in Midtown. In fact, the restaurant was the only one with an all-night license in the city at the time. Dunston even went so far as to say he threw away the key and, therefore, couldn’t close.

Some of Jack’s notable guests included business tycoon Diamond Jim Brady, Aleister Crowley, O. Henry, and Teddy Roosevelt. Though known as a late-night spot, Jack’s maintained a dignified ambiance, and good food and good drink were at the fore.

Stamped with the Brown Bros copyright on the rear.
