Congregation Sha’ar Zahav, San Francisco, 1987. Paperback. Very Good Minus.
Founded in 1977, Sha’ar Zahav was and is San Francisco’s only queer synagogue with a broader commitment to inclusivity for all. Their mission statement says, “We find strength in diversity and create new Jewish traditions that honor our modern lives, both celebrating and questioning tradition,” a tenet that carries into their 1987 community cookbook, Out of Our Kitchen Closets.
Adhering to no specific religious, ethnic, or national cuisine, the cookbook accurately represents the diversity and individuality of the congregation’s members. The sense of community, however, is compounded by the familial ties naturally and necessarily cultivated among queer groups.
The headnotes are brief but charming, as in the one preceding bagels benedict (with cream cheese, lox, poached eggs, and hollandaise): “This kosher-style version of Eggs Benedict is loaded with flavor (and cholesterol) and its physician contributor swears it goes ‘straight for the arteries.’ But one of our testers said it went straight to his heart.”
Varied other recipes include an Iraqi-style haroset, a tofu loaf, chicken liver pate, kasha “tostada” salad, and pineapple kugel.
Our copy is in Very Good Minus condition, showing soiling to the edges. The interior is clean and the binding sound. Issued in paperback only.
