Prentice Hall, Inc., 1945. Hardcover. Very Good Minus. First Printing.

One of the much-loved food writers of the mid-20th century, Welsh-born but settled in America for most of his life, Idwal Jones (1887–1964) was a spirited epicure who provided his enthusiastic readership with delicious accounts of the good life.

His novel High Bonnet (1945) follows the adventures of the grand chef Jean-Marie Gallois as he leaves his native Provence for the great kitchens of Paris. As M.F.K. Fisher observed, “Everything Idwal Jones writes is charged with a special tantalizing flavor, a kind of exotic earthiness...It is nourishing as well as stimulating...to read...” This entertaining picaresque is no exception.

We offer here a first printing in Very Good condition with a lightly soiled, chipped, and price clipped jacket. Gift inscription to the front free endpaper. Lively, chatty, and impressively informative, this is the jolly romp that earned Jones his first major attention.
