Mississippi Hairdressers and Cosmetologists Association, Jackson, MS, c. 1968. Comb bound. Very Good Plus.

Hair and food don’t exactly mix, but we’ll make an exception for this charming community cookbook published by the Jackson affiliate of the Mississippi Hairdressers and Cosmetologists Association to support their volunteer contributions to the Whitfield State Hospital, nursing homes, and children’s homes.

The recipes are largely in line with other community cookbook fare of the era—timely, if not quirky. Just the first page introduces such gems as “foil surprise”—hamburger and vegetables baked in foil, a fitting bachelor-style meal contributed by Joe W. Hughes, Jr.—and Lauree Hughes’ chicken spaghetti, the ingredients for which are cooked separately then combined to heat over a double boiler.

There’s Peggy Smith’s tuna casserole and Louise Durham’s grits souffle. Mrs. C. T. Drummond and Opal Keyes go the quick and effortless route with “easy ice box rolls” and “lazy corn bread,” respectively. There’s a jellied tomato and cream cheese salad—thank you, Eloise Thornton—and Harriet Fincher’s eggplant casserole, with Velveeta and cream of mushroom soup. And Hilda Griffin will really have you flying with her whiskey balls—vanilla wafers, powdered sugar, pecans, corn syrup, and uncooked whiskey.

Our copy is in excellent condition, the comb intact and the interior unmarked. A card from Mrs. Charles P. [Deb] Gabriel, presenting the book to a friend, is taped inside the front cover. She recommends the oyster Rockefeller. Undated but issued c. 1968.
