OP: Cooking with Exotic Fruits and Vegetables
Henry Holt and Company, New York, 1987. Hardcover. Fine in Very Good jacket. First US printing.
The British author Jane Grigson (1928–1990) was one of the finest among 20th century food writers. Although her earlier Book of Vegetables (1978) and Book of Fruit (1982) are more famous, Grigson’s lesser known Cooking with Exotic Fruits and Vegetables (1986) is surely the most handsome of the three. Produced in collaboration with the artist Charlotte Knox, this is a cheerful and intelligent meeting of two outstanding talents.
Grigson offers graceful but focused descriptions from galangal and ivy gourd to roselle and asparagus beans; Knox provides striking likenesses, more akin to portraiture than to traditional botanical renditions, penetrating the character of the plants with an artist’s eye.
Our copy is the first US edition in Fine condition. The jacket is price clipped and shows some shelfwear, in addition to an easy-to-miss stain on the front cover.
