J.P. Tarcher, Inc., Los Angeles, 1975. Hardcover. Very Good.
The best celebrity cookbooks allow the personalities of their contributors to shine, and the Celebrity Kosher Cookbook (1975) happily succeeds in that, making it just as rewarding to read as to cook from.
Professional baseball player Ken Holtzman reports being served a pork chop for his kosher meal on a flight. Actress Susan Strasberg recalls a Jamaican housekeeper who had worked for a rabbi so long that she only cooked kosher and did so expertly: “[H]ere she was making pot roast we hadn’t seen the likes of since my grandmother died.” And comedian Arte Johnson shares the childhood memory of a whole canning season ruined by a mouse in the kitchen, which his grandfather took upon himself to go after with a shotgun, “Needless to say, the mouse got away. My grandfather, however, succeeded in breaking every jar on the stove. The green beans exploded and were hanging from the ceiling like stalactites for weeks.”
Our copy is Very Good, totally clean and unmarked. The jacket bears some creasing and wear but is intact. A nice gift for someone nostalgic for this particular era of celebrity.
