Little Sunny Makes Kimchi With Halmi

This endearing children's book tells the story of a cooking project involving Sunny, a little Korean-American girl, and her visiting grandmother, Halmi. Halmi arrives from Korea with her suitcase stuffed with bottles and bags of ingredients: pepper flakes she ground and dried in the town square with other women; minced garlic from her garden; fish sauce made by one of her daughters; and more. With the help of Sunny and her little brother Tak, Halmi buys all the fresh ingredients she needs and begins the process. Sunny and Tak are her helpers all the way through, taking apart cabbages, showering the leaves with salt, rinsing them, mixing them with spicy paste, and—just as important—learning to be patient and work together.
Heartwarming illustrations show Sunny working right alongside Halmi, getting messy, cleaning up, and, finally, enjoying the kimchi. There's even a traditional kimchi recipe (with an easy vegan adaptation) so that kids and adults can work together on recreating Sunny's adventure with her grandmother.
Watercolor and ink illustrations throughout. Hardcover.
