Isa Chandra Moskowitz always brings a saucy attitude to her cookbooks. What else would you expect from a woman who co-authored a book called Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World and penned another called Veganomicon? She's also had a great eye for subjects that have not been well addressed, including an introductory cookbook for people who are vegan, which she offers here.
In a brisk but friendly voice ("Control your heat. Food doesn't burn itself!") she offers reassurance and clarity for beginning cooks, as well as those who have become vegan and are slightly baffled by giving up animal products. Although the visual appearance of the book recalls a kid's cookbook in some ways, the recipes here are seriously written and and designed to appeal to adult tastes. Any beginner who starts with this book will find its recipes appealing long past the stage when they feel like a kitchen newbie.
For example: pesto fusilli with zucchini and toasted pine nuts; garlicky white bean and asparagus soup; lentil and mushroom shepherd's pie; chocolate pistachio biscotti; banana cinnamon-swirl muffins.
