Downtown Italian: Recipes Inspired by Italy, Created in New York's West Village

With a quartet of popular restaurants in New York City–L’Artusi, L’Apico, Anfora, and dell’anima–Campanale and the Thompsons have become an important part of the casual dining scene in the West Village, in large part because their food and beverage offerings are comfortable but not always familiar. They achieve this in part by exploring traditional dishes from lesser known regions–buckwheat noodles with brussels sprouts, potates and fontina cheese from near the Swiss border–and also by gently incorporating American influences, as with a blueberry-polenta upside-down cake. Stylish and contemporary without any unnecessary bells and whistles, and well-supported by thoughtful suggestions for beverage pairings. Quite nice.
