Sunset Publishing Company, 1995. Hardcover. Very Good. First printing.

Whether you have a hankering for French toast at 3 in the afternoon; chicken noodle soup or a club sandwich at 2am; or chicken pot pie, spaghetti and meatballs, and a warm brownie for breakfast; the great pleasure of an old-fashioned diner is that your cravings will be met with no judgement.

Though one might argue that the real joy is in the convenience of not having to make the food yourself, Diane Rossen Worthington’s 1995 book on diner food at least provides the option. With recipes for all of the above and more, Diner: The Best of Casual American Cooking is an invitation to make diner classics at home.

This is exactly the type of book we wish we had more of on hand for international tourists wanting a quintessential “American food” book or for seasoned cooks exhausted by haute cuisine, looking for homier fare.

Ours is a Very Good first printing, including the jacket, with a previous owner’s bookplate to the front free endpaper.
