Julia Sherman is a visual artist who works frequently with food. She made a mark several years ago with a book called Salad for President, which ties into an ongoing project of hers.
In Arty Parties she shares entertaining ideas from many different artists, providing ideas for creative tables, party formats, and, of course, food and drinks.
You can adapt and embroider party ideas as you wish, drawing inspiration from children's tea parties, hearty lunches prepared for the crew at an artist's studio in NYC's Chinatown, a 20th anniversary celebration for a Paris publishing company, or soups prepared for a fundraiser in a pottery studio.
Recipes lean toward the vegetable-centric and are imaginative without being contorted to fit a particular party concept; crispy Napa cabbage with cilantro-yogurt sauce, feta, and pickled red onion; rigatoni with jammy summer squash and tomato sauce; slow-braised leg of lamb tacos.
Fun as well as thought-provoking.
