Immerse yourself in the taco culture of Monterrey, Mexico's second city. This is a place where specific tacos are identified with neighborhoods, tacos are both street and home food, and breakfast is the perfect time to consume taco barbacoa.

Tacos Monterrey is a guidebook, not a cookbook, joining companion volumes on Mexico City, Tijuana, and Guadalajara. The editorial team of Guia Domingo rates taco stands and restaurants on a scale of one smiling sun to three. One sun means "well-deserved prestige. They're the pride of the neighborhood." Three suns means "a taco institution, respected by young and old... they've taken their tacos to such a level of perfection that, regardless of where you are, the trip is worth it."

Tacos el Amigo Barbacoa 100% de Res, a three-sun spot, is as famous for the challenge of finding a nearby park as for its all-beef barbacoa, prepared with fattier American beef. The legend around another three-sun spot, Tacos Don Lupe, says that founder don Lupe Aguilar started serving tacos out of his grocery store, which began to fail as customers came only for the tacos. Now the tacos often sell out to people who order bags full. A taco truck in the city's cemetery district sells panteoneros, or gravedigger tacos, with a choice of corn or flour tortillas.

Most profiles teach readers something about Monterrey's history: the boom times that drew people from elsewhere in Mexico, brands like Carta Blanca beer that are indelibly identified with the city in the Mexican imagination, and how the city's vibrant taco culture continues to flourish today.
