Silver, a journalist whose work has appeared in the New York Times, the Forward, and on National Public Radio, was more than bereft at the closing of a Brooklyn knish shop she had known all her life.

Her sense of loss inspired a quest to uncover the origins of the symbolically resonant stuffed pastry beloved by Ashkenazic New Yorkers. The most common fillings are potato and kasha, but Silver quickly learns that for every two Jews there are three opinions about the ideal knish and its history and gamely sets off on an affectionate journey that will take her from Coney Island to Poland to Minnesota and yes, even California.

A smart treat.
