OP: Ralph Steadman's Jelly Book
Scroll Press, New York, 1970. Hardcover. Very Good. First US printing.
British illustrator Ralph Steadman’s (1936– ) work may be most recognizable from his long partnership with journalist Hunter S. Thompson as the artist behind the frenetic cover of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and other works. But the author/illustrator has had a prolific career, lending his skills to numerous publishing projects, including the cover for Anthony Bourdain’s Appetites cookbook. Besides his decidedly adult creative projects, he also produced a number of children’s books like this 1967 Jelly Book.
Jelly Book explains the surprisingly complicated origin story of “Jell-o gelatin—or jelly as it is called in England,” from its harvest from jelly trees to its processional into town on the backs of pink cows and ultimate reception and distribution by the mayor.
Our copy is in Very Good condition, showing very moderate wear. The jacket is price clipped but otherwise nice and intact. First US printing (1970).
