The SS Deutschland—first launched in 1923 (not to be confused with another ship of the same name decommissioned in 1925)—served the Hamburg-Amerika Line between Hamburg, Germany and the ports of the eastern United States.
In 1940, the German Navy appropriated the ship for the war effort, and in 1945 POWs and concentration camp prisoners were concealed from invading Allies below deck without access to food. A tremendously vulgar about-face from its luxury liner years.
Good condition with a lateral crease across the center. Bilingual in German and English. 5.25” x 9”.
