Camden, NJ, The Daily Post Steam Power Printing House, 1886. Hardcover. Very Good.

A community cook book “contributed by the ladies of St. Paul’s P.E. Church, Camden New Jersey.” 1886. One of the earliest New Jersey books and among the very few published in Camden, this is a quite interesting compilation of home dishes, almost totally from the era before prepared foods became staples of the American kitchen. Baked shad, clam fritters, potted beef, pickled walnuts, rice waffles, churned apples, Jersey cake.

The book is a small—6-1/2” x 4-1/2”—90-page hardcover bound in brown cloth and gilt-stamped on the front. It carries no advertising and in this respect is somewhat unusual. This title is not often seen and is held by a relatively small number of libraries.

An unexpectedly sound copy. The stamping on the cover is worn and the spine shows signs of wear. The book’s contents, with the exception of a single lightly stained page, are clean and good looking, and while the sewn binding is somewhat fragile, requiring delicate handling, the book block is fully intact. Compared with copies we have seen described, this copy is Very Good.
