Illustrator Ben Nadler pays playful tribute to the foods and institutions that Ashkenazic Jews brought to North America.

From the difference between delis and appetizing stores to lox and bagels, Nadler provides pop history backgrounds and occasionally wades into controversies (see black-and-white cookies). He also profiles a dozen different delis scattered from Los Angeles to Montreal, New York to Houston.

We learn that 50% of Dr. Brown’s soda sales still come from New York. That kishkes have fallen out of fashion—but not off the menu at Manny’s Cafeteria in Chicago. And that the livers in kosher chopped liver must be cooked twice.

While hardly the last word on the Jewish deli, this is a fun and friendly introduction to a subject for which there should never be a last word.

Hardcover. Color drawings throughout.
