This collection of stylish home recipes from the star of Food Network's Girl Meets Farm is wide-ranging enough to be a far cry from traditional American farm food.

Author Molly Yeh, born and raised in the Chicago area and schooled at Julliard in New York, now lives on a Minnesota farm. She brings an eclectic mix of culinary experience to her cooking. Her boundary-crossing ideas seem to predict a future in which more farmers are the world-savvy children of Jewish and Chinese parents who happen to be growing sugar beets.

For example, that Midwestern staple the hotdish (a full-meal casserole) becomes a pizza-inspired veggie white bean hotdish packed with spinach and black olives. Minnesota's own Juicy Lucy, a burger with the cheese inside the meat, gains a kimchi topping in Yeh's version. Feta and za'atar omelet roll-ups summon up the eastern Mediterranean at the same time they make handy breakfast-on-the-go for working farmers or any busy parents.

Yeh's recipes are often accompanied by very personable, almost chatty introductions; we appreciate the effort that the book's designer put into making sure that ingredient lists and instructions are not separated because of the extensive headnotes.
