Although Parisians may profess to be horrified by Americans (and others) who don't take time to sit down and enjoy a meal, whether they eat walking down the street or scarf down lunch while working at their desks, there is some evidence that food-on-the-go has a place in daily Parisian life.

This collection of recipes offers modern quick eats from streetside restaurants, groceries, take-out shops, and delis in Paris. It's both a cookbook and a diner's guide, helping you to find or prepare everything from Hot Dog Chicago Supercharged (from Gregory Marchand's Frenchie to Go in the 2nd arrondissement) to Arepa de Pabellon (from Aji Dolce in the 9th).

Although imported foods predominate, there are classic French dishes to be found. For instance, Croque Monsieur from Faste in the 10th; Les Frites Panisse from Bagnard in the 3rd.

Strict traditionalists may not find the food or the manner of eating it appealing, but there's a vigorous energy evident in these pages that makes us, at least, happily wish for another chance to stroll the streets of the city.
