La Fontaine de Mars is an old-school (since 1908) Parisian bistro, located near the Eiffel Tower yet somehow able to resist the influence of hordes of tourists on its dedication to good French fare.

If you’re looking for modern takes on French restaurant food, turn your eyes toward Greg Marchand or toward Jane Sigal.   Un Bistrot Parisien offers entry into a world where the red-checkered tablecloths are not an ironic reference; they’re an original part of the place.

The cuisine is straightforward: fricassee of rabbit with mustard; leg of milk-fed lamb with potatoess; blanquette de veau. Food photography is appealing and unpretentious, as are the photographs of the restaurant and its staff.

Quite charming.

In French. Paperback. Color photographs throughout.
