Born from a magazine that spawned two London restaurants, Noble Rot: Wine from Another Galaxy is an irreverently knowledgeable guide to wine. Focused on European wines and enjoying plaudits from people as diverse as legendary American wine guru Kermit Lynch, chef Pierre Koffman, and musician Brian Eno, it’s a way of pressing the reset button on the way you enjoy wine.

“Even if you think you know that Barolo smells of roses and tar, or Chablis tastes like it has trickled through ancient oyster beds,” writes Dan Keeling in his introduction, “great bottles always have an originality that begs the question: how can this be made from just grapes?” And away you go on an adventure packed with uncompromising advice slipped in as the authors lose themselves in their appreciation for a particular wine or an iconoclastic vintner.

Initial discussions of wine making and standards are strong but not really the point here, as the authors try to build your understanding of great wine by turning you on to the ones they most love. It could be arcane and opaque—something like hearing someone praise yet another indie band you’ve never heard of—but instead it’s all vividly written and conveyed with an infectious passion.
