OP: The Alice in Wonderland Cookbook
Clarkson N. Potter, Inc., New York, 1976. Hardcover. Very Good. First printing.
If any one children’s story perfectly lends itself to reinterpretation through the medium of cookbooks, a strong case can be made for Alice in Wonderland. The narrative is laden with whimsical references to food and eating, often as major plot drivers.
From the empty jar of orange marmalade snatched while falling through the rabbit hole to “drink me” soup, “eat me” cakes, and an oyster banquet inspired by the Walrus’ and the Carpenter’s poem, the alimentary inspiration is nearly endless. Combining inspired recipes with scenes from the book and Sir John Tenniel’s original Alice illustrations, this cookbook is a highly pleasing experience for children of any age.
Our copy is a stated first edition. The book block and case are crisp, clean, and unmarked. The jacket is present and unclipped, though showing very modest shelfwear and a piece of clear tape to the foot of the spine, reinforcing a tear.
