OP: (photograph) Motor Cafe (ND)

This item is no longer available.

9.5” x 7.5” photo mounted on a 14” x 11.25” mat of the Motor Cafe at 48th and Broadway. Men in bowler hats chat on the corner in front of the cafe, seemingly eyeing the cameraman across the street. A figure crosses Broadway toward another small congregation on the sidewalk. Neighboring businesses include a lunchroom in the background on 7th Ave., and, on Broadway, the Postal Telegraph-Cable Co., a florist, Men’s Furnishings, a hotel under construction, and, notably, Strauss & Co. Signs who were well-known for the prominent Times Square illuminate signs. Their Trimble Whiskey sign, facing 47th St is just visible in the upper right of the photo, putting it at 1910, when it was erected, or later.

The mat is chipped about the edges, but the photo itself is crisp with light scuffing.
