OP: Cocktails for Two Thousand
Elizabeth Norman Restaurant, New York, 1951. Hardcover. Very Good. Signed.
Maxwell DuBrow earned his chops as a steward at the Savoy Plaza. He ultimately came to run the bar at Elizabeth Norman, founded in 1925 at 1043 Madison Ave and later renamed Madison Pub after a change in ownership in 1956. (It shuttered in 1999, lamented by the likes of Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan and Peter O’Toole). DuBrow presents here a tidy one hundred mid-century standards.
The post-WWII/atomic/aviation age shines bright with drinks like the “A” Bomb, the Air Force Special, the Direct Hit, the Geronimo, the “H” Bomb, the Jet Propulsion, and the Tail Spin. But you’ll also find zingers like the Sneakie Pete, the Sober Judge, the Spinster’s Delight, and Texas’ Little Darlin.
Our copy is Very Good with light soiling and wear to the gray clothbound case. As far as we know, it was not issued with a dust jacket. 4.75” x 6.5”, unpaginated. Signed and inscribed by the author to a previous owner on the front free endpaper. Zany black and white illustrations by Carla Willyoung. Scarce.
