Encourage a love of food and of geography in this handsome book written for kids 7-12 years of age. Featuring entries for all the states, plus Guam, Puerto Rico, Washington, DC, and the US Virgin Islands, United Tastes of America is a fun survey of the highlights of American regional cooking.
Author Gabrielle Langholtz offers brief, engaging summaries of local cuisine that are tied to a state's history and culture. The spreads include a map highlighting a state's location, so that kids can understand where Kansas is relative to Utah or Kentucky, as well as fun facts about well-known ingredients or dishes. There's also a carefully selected recipe to suggest something salient about a state's home cooking, such as buttermilk biscuits with sawmill gravy from Arkansas, blueberry muffins from Maine, or a bison burger from Wyoming. The difficulty level of the recipes varies, so there's a helpful index at the back of the book arranging them by complexity.
A book to excite many types of curiosity.
