OP: The Story of Typhoo and the Birmingham Tea Industry
Quiller Press, 1990. Hardcover. Very Good Plus. First printing.
The Story of Typhoo (1990) is a well-researched account of Birmingham’s history with tea and its own homegrown tea company, Typhoo. Illustrated with the author’s own artwork, as well as historical photographs and documents, it is a great introduction to the tea trade and its growth from the 17th century and beyond.
You’ll discover how tea drinking was slow to come to Birmingham but by the end of WWI, the city boasted more than 850 tea distributors, and that during WWII, two bombs fell directly on the Typhoo buildings, causing a slurry of tea to run through the streets. Brand loyalists and tea aficionados alike will find much of interest here.
Our copy is is a lightly shelfworn, but unused, first printing. A great gift for a tea drinker in your life or anyone interested in the growth, marketing, and history of commodity industries.
