Digest bills itself as a magazine for eaters and thinkers, asking how food shapes the way we live. It's certainly not written for people of lukewarm spirit. New York is the center of its universe, but there is some good food elsewhere.

Some issues have themes, some seem to bounce from unusual subject to unusual subject, happily ignoring any connection other than food. This issue represents the joy of the latter. For example:

  • The theater as a place to not just enjoy a film without the interruption of the outside world, but also enjoy a popcorn, smuggled candy, and a soda as a meal to cure homesickness.
  • An ode to the Italian-American Rom-Com... and a recipe for the monument to breakfast that was Rose Castorini's peppers and eggs confined to holes of toasted bread from the 1987 film Moonstruck.
  • Memories of the author's childhood, and mother who could make nearly anything from scratch, and her unrelenting quest to visit the chain restaurant Outback Steakhouse.

Digest never takes itself too seriously. It’s always a little funky, more than a little fun, and nothing like what you find in other print publications.

Paperback. Color photographs throughout.
