Ruby Tandoh’s penetrating, funny, sometimes scathing examination of contemporary food culture may make you squirm uncomfortably at times. She sympathizes.

As she writes, “Nothing turns me off something quicker than the wrong people liking it, by which I mean people almost identical to me in every respect, in a way that doesn’t flatter me.”

Tandoh is a journalist, cookbook author, former Great British Baking Show contestant and philosophy student. While we don’t share every criticism she levels at social media, food producers, restaurants, and yes, cookbooks, Tandoh's breadth of perspective makes it clear that she’s not just tossing off a list of complaints.

She has thought deeply about the implications of recipe websites, advertising, appliances, restaurant reviewing, and many other forces; she doesn’t hate them all, but she wants us to be more aware than we seem to be when in the grips of seemingly inescapable pressures from all around.

Bracingly eye-opening.

Hardcover.
