Legendary Women Cookbook Authors, Part 3

This spring, we return to one of our most beloved themes: legendary women who changed how—and why—we cook. The history of cookbooks is, in many ways, the history of the home kitchen. These three authors wrote with vision, confidence, and deep cultural insight, and their books remain as vibrant and relevant as ever.

If you can't sign up for the whole Spring 2026 season, we invite you to join chef and educator Annette Tomei for A Taste of Country Cooking by Edna Lewis.

Meets on Zoom, Tuesdays, June 9 & 23, 7:30-8:30 pm ET

Born in rural Virginia in a community that her grandfather, a freed slave had helped found, Edna Lewis became a celebrated New York City restaurant chef. But with this book, originally published in 1976, she made her most lasting contribution to American culinary heritage by returning to the food and culinary philosophy of her childhood.

It's an compelling account of a way of life—we know many people who own the book simply to read it—that is hard to envision most Americans enacting today.

Includes a copy of The Taste of Country Cooking, two live Zoom session (recorded in case you can't make it), activities to deepen your engagement with the book, a private online discussion group, and guest appearances from cookbook authors and culinary experts.
